Blood pressure?
Will you get sent home for a high pulse when you get your blood pressure checked? White coat syndrome... Pretty worried about it!
What about getting sick during boot camp? Or injured? Thanks for the help! |

Blood pressure at MEPS or Bootcamp?
At MEPS they will temporarily disqualify you. You'll go home, and have your regular doctor record your blood pressure three times on three days in a row to try to get a more accurate reading. As long as that checks out, you should be good. As far as getting sick or injured in bootcamp, everyone gets sick. But, if you get more seriously sick or injured, it depends on the severity and the amount of time it will take you to recover. If it's something you can reasonably be expected to recover from, you'll be put in medical hold until you are well enough to complete bootcamp. If its a disqualifying injury, you may be medically discharged.

Okay so while they realize white coat syndrome is a thing, I did meet a guy who got sepped for his blood pressure - it was always over what they wanted it to be.
Sick isn't a big deal, you've got lots of people coming from different places every day, and they do bring germs with them. If you're SIQ for too many days they may ASMO you to a different division, but the only time I saw that happen was with pneumonia. Injuries are a big problem. I can say this because I had one. I went to RCU aka medical hold the same day my division went to battlestations, and didn't graduate until 2 months later than I should have. Basically if you aren't FFD by 180 days from your arrival at bootcamp you get sepped for not recovering fast enough. If you have anything more than a minor injury I would recommend going home and waiting until you're better. |

You can get a waiver for whitecoat at MEPS. What Guppy said is true- they will temporarily DQ you at MEPS and give you a paper that you have to take to your doctor on three separate days for BP/pulse checks. But if you truly have whitecoat, it will still be high. But your doctor can write a statement to that effect and it should get a waiver. Then when you get to bootcamp and it's high, you will not be DQed because of the waiver.
Everyone gets sick, at least to some degree. Shoot, I got a ride in an ambulance for a two night stay in the hospital I was so sick, but it didn't roll me back or get me kicked out. As much as your RDCs threaten you, the worst that will happen is SIQ for a couple of days and you might have to make up a test or something. As far as injuries are concerned, most people get injured because they're not physically fit before going to boot camp and/or can't or don't run. If you can get your body used to running now, you'll be far better off and your likelihood of injury will be at a minimum. |
