I know this post is a little old, but for the benefit of everyone headed to Charleston soon, I'll bring it back to the forefront. If you don't do anything else while you're there, EAT!!! So many good places to eat there. Poogan's Porch (best shrimp & grits on the planet), Hominy Grill (get the "Big Nasty." You won't regret it.) and Sesame Burger (one of the best burgers I've ever had) are my top 3 but there are a ton of other great places to get a good meal. Hyman's Seafood is one of the big tourist places to eat but, honestly, I think it's over rated. You're better off going to Long John Silvers and saving yourself some money. Be prepared to shell out some $$$$ at some of the places, but it's worth every penny. If you want some decent Chinese food for not a lot of $$ there a place called No. 1 Kitchen in Goose Creek just down the road from the base. That place opened when I was a student at Prototype in 1996 and it's still going strong.

As far as things to do, there's a ton of stuff. Patriot's Point is a favorite of mine. Fort Sumter is right there too. The market downtown is a good way to spend an afternoon. They have horse drawn carriage rides through the historic areas of downtown. My wife did one of the ghost tours and said it was really cool. If you want to go to the beach, Isle of Palms is the best beach in the area. Folly Beach is a close second.
