A lot of new corpsman go to NMCSD, Bethesda, and Portsmouth right after A school. You get a lot of nurse training as well if you work in the impatient ward. You would want to aim for NMCSD (Naval Medical Center San Diego).

I would be cautious on thinking so far ahead that all you have in your mind is "get stationed in SD". Definitely slow yourself down and consider a C-school rather than just going to the fleet, especially if you do we'll in Corps School. Those schools are such a good opportunity and a lot of the techs end up with civilian certifications. That's just the advice I've gotten from almost all of the active duty Corpsmen I've talked to so I'm just passing it along.

Sue, there are HMs on every ship.... From our experience though, most of them have done some time in one of the learning hospitals first.. The ones that go straight to the fleet are usually some sort of tech... And I agree with trying to get a c-school.. We have friends that are dental techs.. Pharmacy techs.. etc... These are jobs with real world options..

When i graduated corps school June 2012, we had 1 female get a ship billet. First ship billet since moving corps school from Great Lakes to Ft. Sam Houston. There was about 15 people who decided on C-School billets. Most of the good NEC seats are filled before they are offered to a-school. For dental, you have to have that in your contract cant choose it from a-school.
